This EMD SD40-2 was the most popular second-generation diesel with sales of over 3000 in the U.S. and more than 700 in Canada. There were many variations of this popular diesel because of the long production run. With 16 cylinders producing 3000hp, the SD40-2 road switcher was practically the standard locomotive of the late 1970's and early 1980's. Many of these locomotives are still in service today for the original purchasing railroad or a second-hand operator.
